What is a Fraud Alert?

Fraud alerts establish road blocks if identity thieves attempt to use your good name to obtain credit. The alerts tell any company that uses your credit report, such as a bank or insurance company, that the person using your name may be a thief. The creditor, lender, or other prospective user of a consumer report must take steps to verify your identity before it can:

Issue new credit
Increase credit lines
Arrange loans
Create new accounts for such things as utilities and cellular phones

After a fraud alert has been placed in your credit file, any creditor using that credit file to grant new credit or an extension of credit in your name must contact you by telephone (using the phone number specified in the fraud alert) or take reasonable steps to verify your identity and confirm that the credit application is not the result of identity theft. If someone else is trying to use your identity to get credit, the fraud alert usually stops them cold. We say “usually” because nothing is perfect. That’s why we have a Guarantee.

How much does LifeLock cost?

We charge $9 per month or $99 per year per adult.

How does LifeLock protect my identity?

Within hours of your enrollment credit reports are ordered and alerts requested on your behalf. Every time you apply for new credit or someone tries to do something with your credit - you should receive a phone call from the bank asking if you are actually the person applying for credit in your name.

Can I cancel at any time?

There is no long-term commitment with LifeLock. You can cancel at anytime, just call us anytime. If you have pre-paid, we will refund any unused amount.

How is LifeLock different from a credit monitoring system?

Many people compare us to credit monitoring services, like those provided by the credit bureaus. We're not like credit monitoring, we are the next generation. Which would you rather have, a lock on your door keeping the thieves out, or an alarm telling you after the thief has ripped you off? We think most people would prefer to keep the thief out in the first place. And that's what we do. As our name states, we're the lock, and you hold the key.

And what happens if your Identity is stolen when you have credit monitoring? Does the credit monitoring service hire and pay the best and brightest professionals they can find to do the work to help you resolve it? No. Do they reimburse you for losses? No. In fact, they don't do anything to help, so you're left alone to herd the financial cats.

Virtually all of the studies we've seen out there say that you will spend at least an average of 30 hours repairing the damage done by an identity thief - FTC Identity Theft Survey Report. That's where we can help. If your Identity is stolen while you are our client, we're going to go out and hire the right people to work for you to get your good name back and it won't cost you one red cent. Period. If you lose money, we're going to re-imburse you all the way up to $1,000,000.

How does LifeLock secure my personal information?

We know you have questions about how, internally, we keep your information safe. After all, you’re giving us your Social Security number.

LifeLock is ISO 27001 certified for data and operational security and follows industry best practices to secure and protect personal information. We conduct background checks on all of our employees, including regular random drug testing. All of our facilities are built with the latest biometric security access as well as state-of-the-art surveillance and alarm systems. No data is stored onsite. No computers anywhere outside of secure data centers have client information on them. And that's just the beginning. We’ve thought through how we ourselves are going to keep your data safe just as thoroughly as we did when we created our system to keep someone out there from misusing your identity.
